Abstract

Surveillance samples allow the distinction between primary endogenous ("imported" bacteria) from secondary endogenous and exogenous ("nosocomial" microorganisms) colonization and infection. This classification permits the development of preventive strategies to control both endogenous and exogenous pathways.
