A model is presented for the tensile and bending analysis of metal‐plate‐connected wood‐splice joints. The model employs a nonlinear, plane stress finite element formulation to allow computation of the internal deformations, stress conditions, and ultimate strength for these joints. The individual stiffness contributions of the wood in the contact area, the steel plate, and the tooth‐wood interface are considered in the analysis. Application of the model shows a strong plate‐size effect in the lateral load resistance of plates computed in the standard manner on a per‐tooth basis. The theoretical mechanical behavior associated with the size effect is discussed. This research shows that current design assumptions represent realistic approximations of behavior for relatively small plate connections, but unrealistic ones for connections involving larger plates. As a result, this research may be useful for refining the design procedure of longer span trusses containing larger metal‐plate connectors. The ability to model bending behavior and assess the effect of gap closure between members is shown. Ultimate bending moments are predicted for two examples within 10%.
