Chippewa people drink alochol in “white” or “Indian” fashion, or abstain from it. Their choices are related to individual factors (age, sex, family role, past experience) and to social contexts. Depending on such contexts, each category automatically evokes certain social consequences. Certain advantages and disadvantages thereby accrue to each option.
