Abstract The rate dependent behavior of AS4/PEEK (APC-2) thermoplastic composite is characterized over a wide strain lange (10x10−6 sec−1 to 1,000 sec−1). The low to moderate experiments are conducted with a servohydraulic testing machine, while the high strain rate experiments are conducted with a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar. Two rate dependent models are introduced to model the material response. A rate dependent model based on a one-parameter plasticity model (Sun and Chen, 1989), and a modified Johnson rate dependent model (Johnson et. al., 1983). Both models are shown to adequately model the experimental results over the complete strain range.
