Simple electrostatic adsorption of negatively charged gold nanoparticles onto the positively charged surface of an ionic bilayer membrane (see Figure) is demonstrated to be a viable method for the preparation of conductive gold monolayers. The membrane's regular, dense arrays of positive charges are believed to favor an almost close-packed arrangement of gold particles, leading to electrical conductivity.
