Abstract

A class of three-dimensional periodic flows of an incompressible viscous fluid with high symmetry in space is proposed to be used for numerical simulation of large Reynolds number flows in order to increase the effective resolution. Information for a single component of the velocity in a domain of 1/64 in volume of a periodicity box is sufficient to describe the whole velocity field. Necessary memory therefore may be reduced to 1/192 of that required for a general non-symmetric periodic flow.
