The ways in which the cleavage-fracture stress and fracture toughness (K IC) vary with grain size in mild steel have been studied. The fracture toughness is related to the cleavage-fracture stress by a microstructural characteristic distance. A statistical argument has been advanced to explain the grain-size dependence of this distance.
