Abstract

The catalytic performance of alumina supported polyphosphoric acid (PPA/Al2O3), as a newly prepared and environmentally benign catalyst, for the one-pot three-component synthesis of 1,8-dioxodecahydroacridines was investigated. The results showed that the catalyst has high activity and a wide range of aromatic aldehydes easily undergo condensations with dimedone and ammonium acetate or aromatic amines under solvent-free condition to afford the desired products of good purity in high yields. Some attractive features of this protocol are high yields, short reaction times, simple procedure with an easy work-up, absence of any volatile and hazardous organic solvents, and recyclability and reusability of the catalyst.
