Crystal field splitting and born repulsion in KNiF3. Contribution to the panel discussion on ligand field theory

Results of ab initio calculations on the crystalfield splitting in KNiF3 are presented and discussed. It is argued that magnitude and sign of these splittings can be understood in terms of the ionic model provided that the Born repulsion terms are properly taken into account.
