AbstractTest methods currently available for determining the resistance of stainless steels and related alloys to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments are assessed. The present understanding of the mechanisms of pitting and crevice corrosion are examined, and the major factors affecting the processes are noted. Accelerated and exposure test techniques are considered in relation to their ability both to provide an accurate ranking of materials and to relate to service conditions. All tests reviewed had some drawbacks.
