Before the invention and successful implementation of the towed streamer in the late 1940s, the ocean-bottom cable (OBC) method, and variations thereof, represented our only means for acquiring seismic data in marine areas. The marine streamer facilitated more rapid acquisition of 2-D data. Its widespread adoption relegated OBC to shallow waters where streamers could not be towed.
