High purity cadmium springs have been creep tested between −6 and 36 °C at stresses below 5 MN/m2. The results have indicated that the creep mechanism is probably that of grain boundary diffusion creep, but with two modifications: first that subgrain boundaries may act as sources and sinks for vacancies and secondly, that the creep behaviour is Bingham rather than Newtonian, i.e. there is a small threshold stress below which no creep occurs.
