Abstract

Abstract Hypotonic stress activates taurine efflux from elasmobranch cells. The transport mechanism involved in this efflux is not known. In this study we show that the hypotonic‐activated taurine efflux from skate ( Raja erinacea ) erythrocytes and dogfish ( Squalus acanthias ) rectal gland tubules is inhibited by stilbene disulfonates. These results suggest that the anion transporter (Band‐3) is involved in the efflux activation mechanism.
