Cells infected by RNA tumor viruses acquire DNA transcripts of the viral genome which serve as intermediates in the life cycle of the virus (Temin 1971). In this communication, we summarize our recent efforts to study the manner in which new viral DNA is synthesized and integrated into the genomes of permissive and nonpermissive host cells and to elucidate the mechanisms by which cells regulate expression of viral genes.
