Abstract

Intense relativistic electron beams were propagated around a 180\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{} toroidal sector to study beam dynamics in toroidal fields. The major drift was along $\ensuremath{-}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{R}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{B}}$ and no $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{E}}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{B}}$ drift was observed, in contrast to the case of plasma in toroidal fields. Based on these observations, a method of injection of electron beams into toroidal fields is proposed.
