Abstract

Ecological studies normally estimate animal population densities at specific study sites. We present preliminary results from the use of a quantita- tive habitat stratification procedure that provides a means of generalizing such estimates to much wider areas, as is necessary for some purposes, such as rabies control in wildlife. We discuss refinements to such methods that might permit greater accuracy of prediction, over similar widespread regions and habitats, at more local levels than herein achieved.
