ABSTRACT: ICE (the International Corpus of English) was initiated to provide the resources for comparative studies of the Englishes used in countries where it is either a majority first language or an official additional language. The national or regional corpora that constitute the components of ICE are expected to conform to a specified common design. Software has been created to facilitate the grammatical annotation of the corpora and to enable the retrieval of lexical and grammatical information. Various applications of the data are envisaged.
