A 137Cs unit for irradiating cell suspensions and small laboratory animals is described. A 25 cm diameter × 4 cm high container is placed in an opening in a lead drawer and is moved midway between two 1000 curies 137Cs sources. Lead compensating filters above and below the capsule hold the field to 116±4 rads/min within the container and the lead shielding of the unit is sufficient to permit its use in an unshielded laboratory.
