Abstract

A methodology has been developed for rapid diagnosis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in contaminated soils. It gives both a quantitative and qualitative estimation of the pollution. The method involves an extraction by sonication with acetonitrile followed by centrifugation and measurement of the supernatant by UV spectrophotometry. Exploitation of the samples' UV spectra is based on a multicomponent approach. The shape of the UV spectra gives an indication on the presence of PAHs. As UV detection is not specific and includes the whole family of PAHs, UV results are always overestimated in comparison with HPLC determination. Nevertheless, a correlation is obtained. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Field Analyt Chem Technol 2: 221–229, 1998
