Abstract. The effects on arterial pressure of long‐term treatment with propranolol and hydralazine have been determined in 17 hypertensive patients (5 with renovascular hypertension and 12 with essential hypertension). The treatment reduced blood pressure in all 17 patients during 28 weeks of treatment (average); daily dose of propranolol was 320 mg (average) and of hydralazine 137 mg (average). Few side‐effects occurred but treatment had to be withdrawn in one patient because of tiredness. The results are compared to those obtained in a group of 82 hypertensive patients, who received propranolol as the only treatment. It is concluded that the combined use of the two drugs may be purposeful not only to achieve improved blood pressure control but also to diminish the side‐effects of each drug.
