Tracking the Maximum Power Point (MPP) of the photovoltaic array is very difficult due to the non linearity of its I-V characteristic which is dependent to the temperature and irradiation conditions. In this paper we propose a new method called sliding mode control (SMC) to maximize the PV array output power. With this method, the PV array output power is used to directly control the dc/dc converter, thus reducing the complexity of the system. The Boost-type dc/dc converter is controlled by the DS1104 R&D controller board. This method has several advantages in comparison to others conventional methods such as best accuracy, good convergence speed and high efficiency. The proposed controller is robust to weather condition changes. Simulation and experimental results are shown.
