Les coquillages marins: objets archéologiques à ne pas négliger. Quelques exemples d'exploitation et d'utilisation dans l'Ouest de la France

The close examination of the shells from archaeological sites with their species names and so their probable origin, the analysis of marks and of the different types of pieces, can help to determine their use. Some examples of the french atlantic coast are described : the use of mussel (Mytilus sp.) as tool during the mid Neolithic, the making of beads from a turbinate shell (Nucella lapillus) at the end of the Neolithic, the making of purple dye from the animal of Nucella lapillus and the preserving of oysters (Ostrea edulis) with sait ? during the Middle Age.
