Abstract

BACTERIAL infections promote hyperglycemia and impaired glucose tolerance in normal persons,1 , 2 or increase insulin requirements of diabetic patients. This study was designed to determine the effect of a mild, self-limited viral illness, sandfly fever,3 , 4 on glucose tolerance in man and to document concomitant dynamic alterations in several glucoregulatory hormones.Materials and MethodsSubjects and ProtocolTen healthy, nonobese men, 21 to 24 years of age, were admitted to a metabolic ward, each having given informed consent.* A 300-g carbohydrate diet was maintained throughout the study.
