The occurrence during a nine-year period of antibiotic-resistant gram-negative bacteria in a urological ward for male patients was studied. Two trends were found. First, the more resistant organisms, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, Providencia, Klebsiella, and Enterobacter, became less widespread; second, the incidence of antibiotic resistance among Enterobacteriaceae decreased throughout the period of study. Coinciding with these ecological changes, consumption of antibiotics decreased considerably.
