Abstract

By applying the selection rules of auto-ionization to the (1s2s2p)4P state of the negative helium ion, it is shown that only the 4P5/2 energy level is not liable to auto-ionization. Provided the lowest triplet state of the atom has positive electron affinity, this ionic state is metastable in the same sense as the triplet state.
