Certain magnetic interaction data (static magnetic moments and "forbidden" magnetic dipole transitions) are interpreted on the basis of a modified shell model of odd-even nuclei. The nuclear wave function is assumed to be primarily an equally weighted admixture of states formed from all possible odd-particle configurations within the odd-particle open shell of the Mayer-Jensen shell model. These configurations are coupled in a prescribed manner so as to give the total angular momentum and parity of the nucleus. The agreement with the data represents a considerable improvement over the Mayer-Jensen model.
