The formation of the cellulose IV polymorph is generally associated with the production of high-performance rayons. The present paper reviews the structure and properties of cellulose IV, starting from the history of its origin, natural occurrence, and formation during various technological processes of rayon manufacture. Different methods of preparation of cellulose IV are outlined, and the influence of various factors (such as pre-treatments, temperature, immersion liquid, etc.) on the transformation of cellulose II into cellulose IV is examined. The relationship of cellulose IV to other polymorphic forms of cellulose is also discussed.
