Abstract

SUMMARY A high incidence of urinary symptoms is reported in twenty‐nine patients with Parkinsonism. Urological investigation of these patients by cystometry and cystography revealed a significant incidence of uninhibited neurogenic bladder disorder, though such tonic bladder activity was not apparently directly related to increased tonus of the striated musculature of the external urethral sphincter. The changes in cystometrogram pattern following stereotaxic surgery show a relationship between lesions in the thalamus or pallidum and tonic bladder activity to suggest participation of the extrapyramidal component of the nervous system in the higher centre control of micturition.
