Abstract

Abstract The ultrastructure of human cervical mucus was studied by scanning electron microscopy. In fertile women, naturally occurring midcycle cervical mucus showed an arrangement of parallel fibers oriented along the main axis of the mucus sample. Sperm migration through a column of cervical mucus in vitro was also studied. It was found that sperm present among the longitudinal fibers were oriented parallel to the them and to the main axis of the mucus sample.
