The complexation of copper salts with new ferrocenyl ligands containing one (L1) and two (L2) bipyridyl moieties has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, UV−visible, EPR, and 1H NMR experiments. Complexation results in significant positive shifts in the potential of the ferrocene/ferricinium couple. The L2 + CuI complex forms a double-stranded helix in the solid state. Evidence is presented for its fast dissociation upon dissolution to give a 1:1 complex.
