Abstract The research reviewed for this essay suggests that at the heart of our experience of place is a multi‐dimensional reciprocity with the surrounding territory. It extends from the most elementary level of physical grounding to the psychological realms of intellect, symbol and emotion. And it opens us to the spiritual domain of ultimate belonging and meaning. The experience of place offers a practical and expansive way of interpreting the clinical and cultural praxis of ecopsychology
