Abstract

IT HAS been shown by Hudson and Pino (1952) that the feeding of Enheptin (2-amino, 5-nitrothiazole) to 12-week-old White Leghorn cockerels at therapeutic levels of 0.1% for two weeks followed by 0.05% drug level during the third week resulted in complete inhibition of sexual maturation. Cockerels that were fed the drug exhibited reduction in comb size and a shrivelled comb texture; reduced testis size and inactivity as shown by histological study; infertility and generally complete sexual regression. An analysis of feed intake data as presented by the authors revealed that these reactions were the result of a daily average drug intake of 48.4 mg. 2-amino, 5-nitrothiazole per kilo of body weight. The work of Grumbles, Boney and Turk (1952) indicated a reduction in egg production, fertility and hatchability of turkey hens fed a diet containing 0.1% 2-amino, 5-nitrothiazole. On the basis of feed and body weight data presented in their …
