Abstract

A LONG the coast of Tanzania between Dar es Salaam and the mouth of the Pangani River beach ridges are characteristic features. It is evident that beach ridge formation has been a long-continuing activity, since some ridges occur on the platforms of all three marine terraces along this part of the coast. The greatest number, however, lie on the platform of the lowest, or Mtoni, marine terrace. Between Dar es Salaam and a point just south of the Pangani River (Fig. 1) the ridge belt is practically continuous, but north of the Pangani, to a point just south of Tanga, the belt is discontinuous, the breaks coinciding with interruptions of the Mtoni Terrace. This study investigates the origin and manner of preservation of the Mtoni beach ridges by examining the environment in which the ridges occur.
