This paper presents analysis and design of photovoltaic inverter systems with self-tuning fuzzy control. The self-tuning algorithm is based primarily on an experimental planning method which is widely used in quality control. By conducting matrix experiments via an orthogonal array, several scaling-factor parameters of a fuzzy controller can be determined efficiently so that the designed fuzzy controller can satisfy the specifications. The proposed inverter system cannot only supply loads with real power but also feed excess power to the utility (grid-connection mode), or can supply loads exclusively (stand-alone mode). In this paper, simulation results have verified the feasibility of the proposed control scheme and hardware results obtained from a system with a 16-bit single chip microcontroller (Intel 80196MC) are also presented to verify the theoretical discussions.
