Abstract Three hundred and ten non‐undercut cervical abrasion lesions in 83 patients were restored with either the photocured resin based restorative material Silux (175 restorations), its chemically cured counterpart Silar (57 restorations), or glass ionomer (78 restorations). A proprietary dentine bonding agent (chemically cured Scotchbond ) was used with Silux and Silar in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, except that no enamel etching was carried out. Restorations were reviewed after six months and one year. At the one year examination, 25 per cent of Silux , 46 per cent of Silar and 2.5 per cent of the glass ionomer restorations had been lost. There was a progressive increase in marginal discoloration around the resin based restorations.
