Abstract

Background: Measurement of aggression is a critical component of studies of pathological aggression and suicidality. The Buss Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI) is one of the most frequently used selfreport measures of aggression. Spanish is a language used by nations on three continents and yet, there is no Spanish version of this instrument. Method: The adaptation process included: translation, backtranslation, review of both versions and application of the resulting instrument to a bilingual sample from the target population. This process allowed for assessment of the equivalence between the English and Spanish version of the BDHI in three stages: linguistic equivalence, conceptual equivalence and scale equivalence. Result: The conceptual and scale equivalence are adequate in this Spanish version of the BDHI. Conclusion: This adaptation of the BDHI is ready to be used in Spanish speaking populations.
