Abstract

In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy of a thin-film -based secondary battery is reported. Batteries made with thin-film cathodes annealed at were found to be electrochemically very similar to their counterparts using bulk cathodes. Complementary information from the near-edge and extended structure from the -edge revealed the electronic and atomic structure, respectively, around as a function of content. The electronic and atomic structure of indicates that upon removal, charge compensation occurs both by formation of as well as holes until reaches 0.25, after which it occurs only by formation of d-holes.
