Historical background to elastic plate analysis and the recognition of membrane stresses that develop as a result of flexural cracking is provided. Tests carried out by the Province of Ontario, Canada, in the early seventies, and the first modern design provisions incorporated in their code in 1979 are described. Results of analytical and physical research work by the states of New York, Texas, Wyoming, and Florida, which confirmed and extended upon the Ontario findings, are highlighted. In particular, the Florida tests indicated the viability of super-thin slabs, the presence of membrane forces in the overhang, and the beneficial effects of a continuous parapet. The Ontario design of slabs will be incorporated in the new AASHTO Code, to be published in 1992. It is expected to save about $100 million per annum in construction cost alone.
