Abstract

The formation and properties of Pb-Sn-O-P-Cl low melting temperature glass are discussed. Good glass formation takes place in the 35-50 mol% P 2 O 5 content range and the best behaviour is with 40 mol% P 2 O 5 . Infrared absorption spectra results indicate that the main structural unit may be SnPO 3 Cl and that the pattern of network formation varies with the P 2 O 5 content. The unique properties of Sn-O-P-F glasses are explained by their structures. Compared with Sn-O-P-F glasses, Sn-O-P-Cl glasses are found to have higher glass transformation temperatures and better chemical durability
