Abstract

Some technical problems of power transmission over distances of 2500-3000 km with half-wavelength lines are examined. The target is to contribute to the feasibility of this so far untried, but attractive extra-long-distance power transmission concept. The following aspects are discussed and analyzed: feasibility of single-pole high-speed reclosure; temporary overvoltage limitation and possible use of metal oxide varistors; and parallel operation of half-wavelength lines interconnected at the sending and receiving ends via conventional AC lines/grids.
