It has been shown that α-methyl- meta -tyrosine (α-MMT) must be decarboxylated in order to bring about release of norepinephrine from tissues. α-Methyl- meta -tyramine and aramine, metabolic products of α-MMT, are even more potent with respect to norepinephrine releasing activity. Thus α-MMT, and no doubt α-methyl-dopa, represent unique ways of administering the corresponding pharmacologically active amines. Far less than stoichiometric amounts of the α-methyl- meta -tyramines are required to bring about and maintain depletion of norepinephrine.
