The relief of dysphagia demonstrates the palliative value of chemotherapy and RT in both tumor types. The similar survival rates of patients with SCC or adenocarcinoma treated either surgically or with high-dose combined therapy (54 to 60 Gy) emphasize the need to evaluate the role of surgery and combined treatment in randomized studies.
