Abstract

It was realized by 1913 that the lactate formed by mammalian tissues from various hexoses is entirely of L-configuration (Levene & Meyer, 1913). Dakin & Dudley (1913 a) and That methylglyoxal gives rise to the 'unnatural' D-lactate caused surprisingly few misgivings. This reaction is now thought to be part of an amino ketone cycle (see Discussion).
