Abstract A method for testing the side‐effects of pesticides on the parasite Encarsia formosa is described. Young E. formosa adults are exposed during 7 days to a fresh, dry pesticide residue. A stagerearing of the host, the whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum , on rooted bean leaves provides 3rd and 4th larval instars. These are offered during 4 hours on day 2, 4 and 7 for parasitization. Both mortality and parasitization are measured. The effect is expressed as reduction of beneficial performance in comparison to the untreated control. Pesticides, that appeared harmless in this test, were found to be harmless in practical situations using integrated control programmes with E. formosa in tomato crops in glasshouses. The test appeared more sensitive than what is known from observations in practice and than what is found in a 24 h test on mortality alone. Together with results from other laboratory tests, on pupae and on the duration of harmful activity, the prediction of the side‐effects under practical conditions could be improved.
