Abstract Thermal degradation of chlorinated cis ‐ and trans ‐polybutadienes was studied by means of pyrolysis‐gas chromatography. The mechanism of chlorination reaction and thermal degradation of the polymers was examined over a wide range of degree of chlorination. The steric structure of so‐called head‐to‐head polyvinyl chloride was elucidated by analysis of such characteristic degradation products as o ‐, m ‐, and p ‐dichlorobenzenes and vinylidenechloride.
