Abstract There are an increasing number of stepfamilies in America, and these families are at increased risk for various problems, and ultimately divorce. Little is known about stepfamilies that succeed in the blending process to become healthy, happy stepfamilies, however, that information is crucial for mental health professionals who work with this family form. The current study focused on healthy stepfamilies that have been together for more than five years. Interviews revealed that the couple was very proactive in the family formation process, and that there was widespread family acceptance of the new partner and marriage. Clinical implications are discussed.
