A novel and efficient methodology for the synthesis of 2-phenylnaphthalenes from styrene oxides using a recyclable [HNMP]<sup>+</sup>HSO<sub>4</sub><sup>−</sup> ionic liquid catalyst with high atom efficiency has been developed. The reaction works smoothly under metal-, acid-, additive- and solvent-free conditions along with excellent yield.
