Abstract

Abstract Fifteen adolescents from stepfamilies were interviewed about their experience during divorce, remarriage, and stepfamily formation. Reactions to the divorce included resignation and largely suppressed feelings over life disruptions and the loss of the biological family. Reactions to the single-parenting phase were divided, with about half expressing negative feelings about suitors and half expressing neutral or positive reactions. The remarriage and stepfamily formation phase was generally experienced negatively, with concerns over powerlessness and lack of voice as well as disruption resulting from changes in living space, relationships, rules, and expectations. Adolescents felt excluded and resentful about reduced intimacy with their biological custodial parent.
