A new green composite of nanocrystalline Mn<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>, <italic>viz.</italic>Mn<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>/HHC containing biocarbon derived from human hair, has been exploited for the first time as an anode that demonstrates superior capacity and rate capability in lithium-ion batteries.
