ABSTRACT As was first described by Bear, Schmitt & Young (1937), a jelly-like and apparently solid cylinder of axoplasm is obtained when the contents of a fresh giant nerve fibre of the squid are extruded. There are several observations which indicate that the axoplasm is also normally in a gelatinized state and behaves like a solid.
